This 3-week program is designed for volunteers who want to experience the best of tropical Far North Queensland while contributing to practical conservation activities along the way.
Based around Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation and Kuranda, the program combines snorkelling-based reef research, marine debris activities, reef health monitoring, rainforest exploration, eco-tours and cultural learning experiences.
In Week 1, you’ll take part in marine reef research and conservation activities across tropical island work sites on the Great Barrier Reef. In Week 2, you’ll continue conservation-focused activities while exploring iconic rainforest locations including the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Kuranda. In Week 3, you’ll continue advanced conservation activities and experience cultural and outback locations, which may include Aboriginal rock art sites, cave walks and an outer reef snorkel or dive adventure.
This is an active, varied program. Some days are conservation-focused, some are tour-based, and some are designed to help you experience the landscapes, cultures and ecosystems that make Far North Queensland so extraordinary.

Continue with the island marine conservation efforts and spend time enjoying eco-tours of iconic locations like Cape Tribulation, Daintree Rainforest, and Kuranda Village, offering a balance of hands-on work and exploration of Tropical North Queensland's natural wonders.
Daintree Rainforest
Discover the Daintree Rainforest, a biodiversity hotspot with unique species and a stunning landscape of rivers and waterfalls. This ancient rainforest, over 135 million years old, is home to the endangered cassowary bird. Guided tours by Indigenous guides offer cultural insights, making this a truly unique experience.
Cape Tribulation
Cape Tribulation offers breathtaking beaches that meet ancient rainforests, creating a stunning natural landscape. As part of the Daintree National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it boasts diverse wildlife and activities like hiking and snorkeling. Kuranda Scenic Railway

Chillagoe
Chillagoe is a captivating destination known for its stunning natural landscapes and unique rock formations. Visitors can delve into its rich history through mining sites and Aboriginal cultural experiences. The impressive Chillagoe Caves and historical sites make this location a fascinating exploration hub for all.
Snorkel and dive day on the Reef
Morning: Head out for a snorkel and introductory dive at the outer Great Barrier Reef. Enjoy the beauty of coral formations and vibrant marine life.
Afternoon: Free time to relax on the boat or participate in additional conservation discussions with marine experts.

This program combines practical conservation activities, marine fieldwork, eco-touring, cultural learning and free time. Daily plans may vary depending on weather, water visibility, ferry schedules, reef conditions, tour availability, safety requirements and local operational needs.
Please only continue if you understand that:
this is a volunteering and touring experience, not a standard holiday package
reef research and conservation activities are snorkelling-based
you need to be confident swimming, snorkelling and spending time in the water
the marine component requires volunteers to swim 50 metres and tread water or float for 10 minutes
you must be comfortable working outdoors in heat and humidity
conservation days may involve early starts, boat transfers, reef monitoring, beach clean-ups and practical fieldwork
tour days may be full, active and weather-dependent
ethical interactions with marine and wildlife are expected at all times
cultural experiences must be approached with respect and care
activities may change due to weather, safety, conservation priorities or local operator requirements

About your organiser
Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers is an ethical conservation travel organisation working across Australia and Asia. We contribute to conservation efforts directly and through the volunteers we help place, prepare and support.
Our programs connect travellers with carefully selected marine, wildlife and environmental projects where practical help is genuinely needed. We work with local partners to support animal welfare, habitat protection, reef and coastal conservation, wildlife rescue and responsible community engagement.
